How to relieve stress today and always

How to relieve stress

How to relieve stress

In 1948 the world health organisation defined health as the state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease. This definition holds till today.

We all need to cope with stuff everyday of our life, some pleasant stuff and unpleasant stuff, the everyday bustles of the modern age challenges our sanity perhaps like never before, we have to cope with family, work, spouses, recessions, diseases, annoying bosses, bad weather, emotions, etc.

But amidst the rubble, the tangle and hustle of modern age, some people are able to perfectly harmonise their physical and mental environment. Perhaps you know such an insulated person, he is happy, motivated and chinning up against all odds.

Some people seem to be in perpetual happiness, maintaining a happy balance between work and family and able to come in good terms with aspirations, responsibilities, dreams, defeats, victories and realities. They recover well from life’s huddles be it a divorce or job loss, they stand up and get going.

If you wish to know how to play the piano, you will have to take piano lessons, if you want to be a doctor you will have to learn from the medical school, is it not ironic how we all long to be happy yet we don’t take time to learn about happiness, we all crave a stress free life yet we are not coached on dealing with life.

Life is too precious to be lived on chances, as much as we trust our inner intrusions we must look outward to learn more from the outside world, whatever you are going through, someone has driven the same road and has written and spoken about it or is willing to share the learnt lessons with you, this digital age puts valuable resources for a better living at our finger tips, you’ve got to search and learn from videos, podcasts , eBooks, articles, etc., your life is precious, you are precious and you’ve got to be happy, there’s no other way!

Accept the offer of these tips to help you live a happier and stress free life.

Take a walk
In the morning after a good night rest, you can take a walk and savour that cool breeze of the early hours. Get lost in nature, observe the birds and the butterflies as you stroll along. Clear your head and plan your day as you walk along.

Don’t be a perfectionist
Yes! There’s a lot of stress in being a perpetual perfectionist, sometimes let go of your rules, it’s okay if the kids break the toys or pour some ink, it’s all part of the fun.

There’s a lot of happiness in making other people happy, as you give and watch others enlivened by your benevolence you get a pay back, it’s nature and it works.

Don’t carry the heavy weight of contempt and anger in your heart, let go of old grudges, give people excuses after all nobody is perfect including you.

Phone a friend
Like in the popular TV show, “who wants to be a millionaire”, you can just phone a friend. I have this very jovial friend I speak with to enliven my mood, he’s a happy guy with depth and a lot of humour, I tend to call him in my low moods and it sure works, perhaps you have someone like that around you.

Don’t try to save the world
There’s economic recession, fighting in Mosul and hurricane… whatever is, feeding one’s mind with such horror stories can lead to a very low spirit, don’t bother yourself about things and people you have no control over, surround yourself with positive things and positive stories as much as possible, and to be frank, just MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!

Be open
Be open to new ideas and new techniques. The answer you need that will change your life might come from a book or a TV show. Don’t be a know it all. If you don’t have a mentor find one, find a mentor for every important aspect of your life. Mentors make the journey shorter and less painful.

Plan your day, week, month
Sometimes all you need to live happier is to try and be more organised. When you are not orderly, things get muddled up and overwhelming. Before you sleep why not make a list of the important things to do tomorrow and when to do them, taking care of your to do list gives you a sense of accomplishment and fulfilment, it also makes us feel in control of our lives so get to it.

Instinctively, I think we know or have an idea of what to do to make us live happier. So stop procrastinating, start working on dropping that bad habit, apologise to people you wronged, look for a book on wellbeing, watch good videos online, take that course you need for a promotion, do something about your business idea, start acting now!

Avoid sad people
I think this is a very important point. Emotions are just as contagious as the flu. Avoid people that only talk about sad things and sad events, they will drag you to their unhappy state. It’s not about being mean or insensitive to others, but it’s your sanity first, isn’t it.
Find time for your hobbies
Is it not a wonder how children seem to be able to find play anytime, anywhere? Somewhere along the line we become these serious adults that no longer play football or video games, we are so buried in serious stuff that we forget the child in us. Studies have shown that exercise is a very potent anti-depressant. Whatever it is you love as hobby, it’s time to deliberately fix it in your routine, do it now.

Take a vacation

Why not save up and travel. Travelling itself is fun. Vacations will help you renew your spirit and Charge up your emotional battery, switch off your regular mobile number, find somewhere to go and relax, if you cannot finance an expensive trip, you can visit a friend or relative you’ve not seen in a long time, you can also visit a different part of the town you are if you don’t want to go far, just be creative and find somewhere interesting to go.

Breathe, live, be optimistic
Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve, as the saying goes, have faith in yourself, your dreams and the future. Rome was not built in a day. Every success story has a failure story behind it, a victim of abuse rose to be one of the richest black women in the world today, perhaps you’ve heard of Oprah Winfrey. Believe in yourself and in tomorrow.

So eat, exercise, love, breathe, believe, give, fly and be happy. We only live once
